One of my favourite ways to get a new book is from a book box. If you don’t know, a book box is a cabinet filled with used books, usually located in a public place, or even on someone’s lawn. There’s only one rule for book boxes-you can take a book for free if you leave a book in exchange. These boxes are a great way to get rid of old books, and to find new ones. Best of all, you’ll always discover something different, since the boxes are public! In this post, I’ll be showing you a few examples of boxes in my community.
This book box is located in front of someone’s house, and was one of the first book boxes in my town. Arguably, it’s the one that I use the most, too. As you can see, it’s decorated with scrabble letters. Many other book boxes incorporate interesting designs and decorations to be eye-catching, so that more people will use the box.
This next book box is located at the Northumberland Centre for Individual Studies, formerly Grant Sine Public School. Students at NIS built this box to help give back to the community.
The final two boxes I’m going to show you both located in Downtown Cobourg,
First, we have 2 pictures of the same book box. As you might have guessed from the sign in the second picture, it is located at the Police Station. Another thing to note, in the first picture you can tell that this box is getting pretty worn. These boxes are exposed to all elements, as well as human nature, resulting in their unfortunate states.
Finally, we have two pictures of the book box at the beach. Thankfully, this box is seasonal, so it’s in a better shape. In my opinion, this is probably one of the best book boxes around in terms of use. Every day during the summer, there are hundreds of people passing it, on their way to the beach. Another thing I like about this box is that it’s one of the most likely boxes to have children’s books, considering that it’s next to a beach AND a trailer park.
Besides the ones I’ve shown, there are tons of book boxes locally and around the world. So, next time you’re done with a book, consider donating it to a book box instead of throwing it away.
What an awesome post! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I think that any town or city that supports the Arts by installing book boxes is a town or city that is on the right track. Keep up the great writing. I am impressed. ❤️👍👏📚

Thank you! I agree with you that places with book boxes are on the right track. Hopefully other cities and towns will install book boxes, too, so that more people can enjoy them.

Beautifully written and the photos are wonderful too! I really love these book houses. The one at Terry Fox School is particularly beautiful if you get the chance to pop over and see it. They elected to keep it inside the school to protect it from the elements. Thanks for another lovely and well-considered post.

Thank you! I didn’t know that there was one at Terry Fox. If I can, I’ll definitely take a look at it!

Thanks for this celebration of books! We have at least one of these book boxes or mini-libraries just down the road. They are a great addition to any community.

Leah, I’m loving your new blog. Books, books, books! My reading piles are growing. When I moved to Bath the first thing I found was the neighborhood book box on my walks. What a beautiful concept that someone thought of. Do you know where the idea began? I just might have to go take a peak today and keep an eye out for others. It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Hope your next find is a sweet surprise in one of those boxes. Thanks for sharing.

It looks like one of the first book boxes was built by a man in Wisconsin in 2009, to honour his late mother. I’m glad that you are enjoying my blog!

What a great idea. Unfortunately, in our area I have NEVER seen a book box. I always have books to find homes for. I try to donate them as much as possible. Most times I drop them off at Value Village.

That’s too bad! Hopefully there will be one in your area soon, though.

Loved this post and love Book boxes. I saw on one the beach in Florida and it was so cute. I’m sure it’s well used. A good friend of mine is a librarian at a school White Rock, BC. Her husband made a beautiful one for their neighbourhood. I’m always on the lookout for them now. I’ll have to visit the ones you’ve mentioned.

I am also always on the lookout for book boxes. It’s pretty cool how wide-spread the concept is.
